Finding new ways to thrive when you work from home

Three years after the pandemic, most office jobs have adopted the hybrid working approach. 47% of workers have reported improved well-being when they can work from home to some degree.

However, home working can also have downsides. You may find you can’t separate your work life and home life from each other as readily. You don’t have the same level of connection with your co-workers and may feel somewhat isolated.

If home working has got you feeling like this, it may be time to think of some new ways to encourage a sense of well-being back into your life.

If home working has got you feeling like this, it may be time to think of some new ways to encourage a sense of well-being back into your life.

A morning or afternoon workout

You may find it beneficial to use the time in the morning that you’re saving on commuting to exercise instead. Getting a workout in before you kick off the day can give your attention span a sharper edge for the day and help you sleep better at night, too.

If mornings don’t work for you, the second-best thing to do is use your lunch break, or failing that, the evenings just after you finish work!

It’s up to you to decide what that exercise looks like for you, be it a morning walk, a yoga session, or running on the treadmill in the gym. Choose something that makes you feel good!

Self-indulgence

Sitting in front of a computer screen for extended periods each day can make you drowsy. Position the screen at arm’s length and keep the brightness levels as dim as you can tolerate. Follow the 20/20/20 rule: Look away every 20 minutes and focus on something about 20 feet away for approximately 20 seconds.

Outside of work hours, don’t forget to do little things to treat yourself. Try cooking a new dish you’ll enjoy, turning on an essential oil diffuser before bedtime or even having a self-care evening. Deck your bathroom out with candles, fresh-smelling soaps, and bath bombs. Try out a new look with semi-permanent hair colour to make you feel brand new or have a Pinterest evening, adding to your vision board for the future.

If life has become too routine for you, see whether there are any new hobbies you can try out in your area. Perhaps you could join a water sports group, a pottery class, or a gardening volunteer group.

Lots of people use their bed as a ‘sanctuary’ at home. But it’s also now common knowledge that blue light in bed can disrupt your sleep habits, and potentially affect your health. Keeping tech to a minimum in your bedroom is crucial for your well-being.

Turn off technology

If we let technology consume our waking hours, we may feel like the days are passing us by and may even suffer from disrupted or low-quality sleep.

Try turning off your devices sometime and simply reading a book or catching up with friends. Alternatively, try setting clear parameters about when you will and won’t use technology: for example, you might aim to scroll social media early on in the evening and then limit online activity to half an hour before bed.
