How to avoid accidents when working from home

More and more workers are now working from home. Recent figures suggest that 44% of workers work remotely either full-time or in a hybrid role. As workers like you are spending more time at home, it is important that you keep your workspace as hazard-free as possible. Here are some tips to help you avoid accidents when working at home.

Less is more. Having fewer items out keeps a space tidy, and also helps reduce distractions

Keep a tidy workspace

As well as looking good, having a tidy workspace can help to eliminate potential hazards. Hiding wires behind your desk can prevent you from tripping over them and injuring yourself.

Similarly, having adequate storage means you won’t have to pile things up on the floor. You could consider investing in a cabinet to fit under your desk when you aren’t using it exclusively for work-related items.

Make sure you have an ergonomic set-up

Having your workspace set up perfectly can help to prevent backaches, shoulder pain and eye strain. When looking at your desk make sure there is enough room for your legs to comfortably fit. If it is too low, look into getting furniture raisers to help create more room.

When choosing a chair you should get one that supports your spine whilst making sure your feet are flat on the floor. If you have armrests they should be positioned so that your elbows are close to your body and your shoulders are relaxed.

If your company has provided you with working equipment then they should be in proper working order and you should report any issues to your company straight away. Should an injury occur as a result of negligence by someone else, you may be entitled to compensation.

Use proper lighting

Eye strain can be incredibly uncomfortable and cause headaches and vision problems. Make sure your work area is lit properly but is not too bright.

Ideally, you should have indirect lighting in your space. This could take the form of natural light through a window or ambient lighting created by strategically placed lamps. However you light your space, you should try and avoid it hitting your screen which could make you strain to see which can cause health issues.

Mindful electric usage

Overloaded sockets are a huge fire risk which could be devastating for your home. Avoid overloading your sockets by using surge protectors. It is important to note that even these will have a maximum ampere amount so it is worth checking before using it.

You should also regularly inspect your wires and plugs for any sign of damage. As soon as you notice some either replace the item, get it fixed, or if it is company property then contact your IT department.

Take regular breaks

Sitting still for an entire workday isn’t a healthy lifestyle for anyone, regardless of being in an office or at home. It can be easier to be more active in an office, however, as you may need to move for meetings and walk further to make a coffee.

You could set reminders on your phone or computer hourly to do some stretches. It doesn’t need to take long but it will help move your body as well as give your eyes a break from the screen.

If stretching doesn’t appeal to you, taking a small break to go outside can be beneficial as well. Rather than spending all day indoors, you can get some fresh air and benefit from a break from work.
